A furnace or duct replacement in an older house can disturb more than metal. White paper tape on duct seams, duct cement, insulation and furnace gaskets are all on Metro’s list of materials to test. We have them tested before the HVAC crew starts and remove what comes back positive.
Wrap or tape that tests positive and crumbles in your fingers counts as friable, which puts it in the hands of a DEQ-licensed abatement contractor. Our HVAC asbestos work covers Tigard, King City and Durham.

DEQ names HVAC ducts and chimney flues among cement asbestos products, which count as nonfriable while intact. They come out whole and wet.
Gaskets on an old furnace are on Metro’s testing list. We sample them before the unit is pulled so the crew knows how to handle it.
The asbestos work goes first. Once the wrap, tape or gasket material is out and bagged, the heating contractor can disconnect and remove the old equipment. If you spot damaged material before then, DEQ’s homeowner advice is to turn the furnace off and close the vents until a contractor has looked at it.
